What Does No Capping Mean on a Slot Machine?

Kleine Gruppen

Essentially what no capping means on a slot machine is that you cannot have your winnings capped. This is often a feature of online slots and can be beneficial as it means that you can have a larger potential for hitting the jackpot. However, it is important to check the help files and pay tables of any slot that you play in order to ensure that there are no maximum winning caps set in place as this may affect how much you can win.

It is also possible for machines to allow a player (known as a punter) the option to hold one or more reels so that they do not spin and yet retain their displayed symbols. This can increase the chances of a payout and is known as a nudge. However, the number of reels that can be nudged for a play may be limited by the manufacturer and this is known as a cap.

Some video slot machines encourage the player to take multiple “lines” by displaying special winning scenes and energizing music, and the more lines they take the higher the chance of a payout. This is a designed feature of the machine and does not constitute cheating as it is mathematically the same as if they took just one line. However, some players have reported that they feel they are being cheated by this practice and are not getting the full payouts that they are entitled to.

The theoretical hold worksheet is a document provided by the machine’s manufacturer that indicates the theoretical percentage a machine should be paying out based on the amount paid in. It also identifies the reel strip settings, payout schedule, number of coins that can be played and other information descriptive of the particular slot machine. This is a useful tool for players to compare machines and determine their risk/returns ratio.

Many state gambling laws restrict private ownership of slot machines. However, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah and Virginia permit private ownership of all slot machines while Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Carolina, Rhode Island, South Dakota and Wisconsin prohibit it. Private owners must be licensed by the gaming control board.

In addition, some casinos require the machine’s owner to be present when a hand pay is required. This is usually done if the machine has exceeded its maximum payout or if the amount of a jackpot exceeds a certain limit. In most cases, this is to prevent a player from taking the jackpot and then gambling it away on a double-or-nothing side game, which is considered a form of capping. This type of cheating is easy to detect with modern video surveillance and is not tolerated by the casino. Those caught engaging in this activity are typically banned.
